Sonic and SEGA All Stars Racing – Races Ahead of the Pack
Kart racing, which was popularized by the Mario Kart franchise, has found a common method to be successful. Sonic and SEGA All Stars Racing, an Android game from SEGA, didn’t steer away from that kind of system as it has everything you’d hope for in a kart racer. Though it’s more than two years old before driving into Google Play, it’s still an excellent kart racer.
In Sonic and SEGA All Stars Racing, you can race through 16 different race tracks as the world’s fastest hedgehog, Sonic, or choose from 12 other SEGA characters. Each All-Star has different vehicles and unique characteristics. The game has the same elements as Mario Kart like the ability to pick-up items throughout the race where you can use it to your advantage or battle opponents in an arena. Race on your own or battle it out with your friends via online multiplayer. The single player campaign has tons of content. Compete in four Grand Prix cups, 25 goal-based missions, time trial against a ghost racer, and single race. In multiplayer, you can play up to four players simultaneously either locally or online, though you will need to sign in to Google to play online. Based on my experience, online play takes time to connect, and it isn’t buttery smooth during the race. There were times that it lagged, but it could be overlooked. In terms of controls, there are two options. One is tilt while the other is a virtual d-pad (for steering). Personally, I had a better time with the virtual d-pad as I find it harder to maneuver with the tilt control.
You will need more than luck to win races. You must have some skill. Power-ups are scattered in each level that can give you that much-needed boost. You can fire missiles to the enemies in front of you, use temporary speed boosts, drop some traps, or turn your opponent’s view upside down. You can also try to earn all achievements and climb the leaderboards to brag about your talent in racing. Further, SEGA fans will notice various SEGA references and you can unlock characters like B.D. Joe from Crazy Taxi, Ryo Hazuki from Shenmue, including Knuckles and Shadow.
I hope that the Battle mode can be featured in single player as it’s only available via multiplayer. If you’re looking for a unique kart racer, then this might not be your game as it doesn’t stray away from the usual kart racer path. Nevertheless, Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing is one of the most fun karting games available on Google Play. This Android game is pretty deep where you can play by yourself or against strangers.
