Zombie Smasher – Who Let the Hordes Out
Thanks to the TV series The Walking Dead (or Twilight, depending on your preference) zombies have become cool and popular. It has even invaded our mainstream culture. Did I mention that the craze has also entered Google’s Play Store as well as evidenced by one of the top free games in the market today – Zombie Smasher?
The Android app is an entertaining action and arcade type of game. Both the gameplay and the concept are pretty simple but I like the execution and presentation done by the developers.
This addictive game is easy to play as you just have to tap the screen to kill the undead. Your goal is to defend the line as waves of zombies are looking to break in your fort, just make sure they don’t disappear on the screen.
Zombie Smasher features three different game modes; story, survival and time.
The story mode lets you play in sixty (60) different levels. To move on to the next stage, you have to kill a lot of walkers without allowing them to leave the bottom of the screen untouched. Lose a heart (up to a maximum of three) if you miss a zombie or accidentally tap a survivor and the game will be over. At the end of each level, you are graded from one (1) to three (3) stars. Smash enough zombies and get lots of combos to guarantee that the most number of starts will be awarded.
As you progress along this fast-paced game, you will be introduced to various types of frightening enemies that will storm the screen, leaving you with a few seconds to react to kill the hordes. Some have special abilities like; the ability to drill underground and teleport horizontally. There is another kind of zombie – a mother and a baby. Once you kill the mother, the baby zombie (which reminds me of Chucky) will dash to you in a hurry. My tip is to double tap the screen when you see the mother and daughter combo.
There are three (3) available special power-ups which you must use wisely; meat, lightning and bomb. The meat will lure away the zombies for several seconds giving you enough time to crush them with your fingers. Lightning will stun the undead as they cross a line of bolt. Lastly, the bomb will blow up the walkers within range.
Power-ups can be availed with a brain (in-game currency) which you can get on the other couple of modes. If you’re a bit impatient, however, you can just buy a number of brains via in-app purchase.
During survival mode, the zombies just keep on walking and your goal, as the name implies, is to survive. Play until you miss three (3) undead or tap a neighborhood survivor. Keenly watch what the walkers may drop as you might get a brain or two (just tap to pick up).
Finally, in time mode, you will be given a time of 1 minute and 30 seconds to smash as many undead as possible. Also, put your sharp eye to test as some of the zombies may drop a clock which can give you additional five (5) seconds if you were able to pick it up.
I have been able to finish the story mode in a few days. Unfortunately, I’m a bit disappointed as soon as I finish the game as nothing happened after completing level 60. Isn’t it ironic that after playing several games, they have a notification in-game if you could rate the game 5-stars on Google Play Store, however, when you are finished with the story mode, no applause is warranted whatsoever?
At first, I tried my luck without using the power-ups but it proved to be futile. I Suggest you master the other game modes first before going back to the story mode. This will entitle you to a number of brains (as a bonus) which will allow you to buy a power-up or two. The power-ups are essential especially in the latter levels (50+) when you will be left with no choice but to allow a zombie or two to leave unscathed.
On another note, there are ads present on the bottom of the screen, however, it’s only activated when the Wi-Fi setting is turned on. So, next time, you know what to do. Although the advertisement is not that obtrusive, I suggest you turn it off.
Anyway, if you are looking for a fun game to play, which is a leave-your-brain-at-the-door type, then I believe Zombie Smasher fits the bill just right. It is an addicting Android game which you can download on Google Play Store for free. I just hope that the developers are putting up an update or two with more new levels to work with.
