5 Best Android Turn-Based Games
The Play Store houses a number of turn-based games that provide awesome tactical encounters. It also covers a number of categories like war games, squad-based combats, and fantasy RPGs, which gives a rewarding experience. Get ready to plan your attack, adjust accordingly to the moves made by your opponents, and engage in fiery battles. With Robot Entertainment’s Hero Academy marching its way into Google Play last week and even though we are still anticipating the release of Civilization for Android, we immersed ourselves this weekend with a number of turn-based games for our mobile devices and picked the 5 best Android turn-based games we’d recommend playing.
Developed and self-published by Harebrained Schemes, an indie video game firm led by the creator of Shadowrun, Jordan Weisman, this Android game was successfully crowd funded through Kickstarter, and arrived on Google Play recently. It is a tactical RPG with gripping, turn-based combat system. If you love vintage yet extensive role-playing experience, Shadowrun Returns engages you with a thrilling campaign and hours of gameplay. Mixing sci-fi, film noir, and fantasy, it gives players a complicated mystery to explore. In spite of its glitches, you will still lose your sense of time playing this deep role-playing game. For $9.99, Shadowrun Returns has plenty of content to dive into where you can customize your character, discover a gruesome cyberpunk future, and you can choose over 300-plus weapons, and wield powerful abilities and spells. Weisman and his team effectively modernized this classic.
Paradox Interactive’s turn-based, pixel-art, retro-style, 8-bit RPG offers the definitive pen and paper simulation experience. Inspired by other great games of the 90s, Knights of Pen & Paper runs on a quirky concept where you set your own challenges as the dungeon master. Assemble your own group, select from different classes, and fight through a dangerous world to beat the dark mage. If you’re a fan of RPGs, you will get hooked into this game as you travel a vast world map where you will finish quests to unlock items and equipment, and level up to improve your skills and stats. The +1 edition introduces new content which includes an extended campaign, new attacks you can use during combat, extra dungeons to explore, and an area where you can store your travelers called Tavern. Knights of Pen & Paper +1 Edition has a sense of humor in place with a fairly balanced in-app purchase system; however, you might find it a bit grinding.
Developed by Rubicon Development, this game is a modern military warfare at its finest. It is a turn-based game that has a distinctive style and humor. It features three game modes (campaign, multiplayer, and skirmish), stunning 3D visuals, and simple controls. Control your troops to fight it out with your enemies on land, air and sea. May sound easy but you have to consider the terrain as it affects gameplay. Campaigns are challenging, missions are also varied where you are sometimes tasked to escort a General, invade the enemy base, defend your HQ, etc. It is fun to watch and sensational to play. Though it may look like an Advance Wars clone, Great Little War Game is one of the top turn-based games for Android.
Created by Sarah Northway, an indie developer, this game has been ported nicely from Flash to mobile. It features some cool-looking comic book cut-scenes in a dark zombie apocalypse setting. Your task is to bring together survivors to help you: defend your fort, reclaim buildings, search for food, build quarters, research technology, and most importantly, kill zombies. Once you start playing, it’s really that hard to put down. With a unique turn-based gameplay, you’ll invest several hours in this fun strategy game. It isn’t particularly deep but it’s quite engrossing to give a worthwhile experience. It’s very rare to find a game that runs on a great concept, is well-polished, has an exceptional game mechanic, and comes with a friendly interface. If you are contemplating of getting Rebuild, now is a great time as it’s currently on sale (from $2.99 to $0.99) this month to celebrate their successfully crowd funded game, Rebuild 3: Gangs of Deadsville. You can read our review of Rebuild here where we gave it a 4.5 Woofs rating.
Mode 7 Games flawlessly ported this indie PC-mega hit for mobile. It is the top turn-based game you can play on your Android devices. You can choose from either a lengthy solo campaign (55 missions) or 5 challenging multiplayer game modes that support cross-platform play. Though the graphics won’t blow you away, it is still artistic enough to fit within the game’s theme. Frozen Synapse is a multi-awarded tactical game that will give you hours of tactical enjoyment. Who knew that a squad-based and turn-based combat will be this addictive? If you are looking for a game that has depth, look no further. You can read my colleague’s Frozen Synapse review here where he gave it a perfect 5 Woofs. He dubbed it as a Game of the Year contender.
