The 5 Best Android Fantasy RPG Games
Fantasy role-playing games are popular because players embark on a vast – almost infinite – adventure, battling it out with the likes of huge dragons, elves skilled with the bow and arrow, and swordsman set out in a fantasy setting. Also, gamers can customize and personalized their characters with basic ratings and expand their personality together with its backstory. Further, what makes playing RPG beautiful is you know the session will not be duplicated. This week, we dip into a sub-genre of RPG and list the 5 best Android Fantasy RPG games.
Set in a satirical fantasy world of Midgard, players take on the roles of wizards whose mission is to stop a wicked sorcerer from completely causing chaos. Developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by Paradox Interactive, this Android game has been simplified as compared to its PC counterpart. It provides, however, just as much fun. You can go on a single player campaign or play with your friends in a multiplayer co-operative mode. The multiplayer supports cross-platform (up to 4 players) so you can duke it out with your Apple buddies as well. Freely cast your spells against opponents (or even your friends) in several levels. This action-adventure / brawler / side-scroller / RPG has vibrant graphics and an excellent gameplay that you will never get tired of. My colleague, Mike Deneen, has given Magicka: Wizards of the Square Tablet a perfect 5/5 Woofs in his review.
At first, you may have probably judged this retro style RPG to be cheesy. Once you played it though, you will enjoy a game full of humor. Developed by indie developers, Behold Studio, and published by Paradox Interactive (again), this turn-based, 8-bit pixel-art role-playing game gives you the one of the best pen and paper experience. Inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, RPG fans will love Knights of Pen & Paper as you play both the characters and dungeon master, giving you control as to which battles you want to engage in. Create your own group of players from different classes with an ultimate goal in mind: beat the dark mage. The +1 edition offers a prolonged campaign with more dungeons to discover, additional attacks to use, and a place to store your group. The game may be grinding for some as you unlock items and gears for gold. Also, there were performance issues in the past but with the regular updates the game receives; it will most likely be smoothed out eventually.
Last June, the fourth installment of the Final Fantasy series has finally arrived in the Play Store. Its popularity has skyrocketed due to its distinctive characters and gripping storylines. What sets it apart from the other games in the series is it was the first to introduce Active Time Battle system. You assume the role of a dark knight named Cecil whose mission is to prevent Golbez, a sorcerer, from taking away crystals and eventually wiping out the world. Despite the fact that it has the quirks of the classic Japanese RPG (JRPG) genre, Final Fantasy IV has become the breakthrough of the series with its character-driven plot and exciting adventure.
Developed by Mika Mobile, this action-RPG video game is set in an epic fantasy setting. The controls are great as you can command your army with its easy touch interface. Create your party from varied character classes ranging from rogues, wizards to knights and customize their skills. Play a good amount of levels (30+) with boss battles and collect 100+ items to equip. My fellow writer, Ian DeMartino, has reviewed Battleheart and gave it 4/5 Woofs. He wishes it was easier to grab characters, more environments available and additional rewards in the Arena mode. Nevertheless, he still finds the game to be fantastic and worth the $2.99 price tag.
The Ultima series introduced elements such as party-based combat and tiled graphics way before and has been a standard for RPGs. So, if you like old-school role-playing games like Ultima, you’ll never go wrong with 9th Dawn as it adds a bit of a modern touch with a vast world for you to explore. The location is set in a fantasy island named Montelorne, a large continent full of danger, mystery and adventure. The mix of a huge open world and modern RPG elements is simply perfect. You’ll dive into a detailed world right from the beginning. Choose from one of the three standard classes: knight, archer or mage. Search for treasures, help the people of Montelorne against the undead, or just simply explore its extensive world.
